2008 World Title: Bonga Wins

perkins2_xl.jpgHawaiian Bonga Perkins took out the second and final event on the World Longboard Tour, and in doing so became World Champion for the second time ...

Bonga (shown celebrating at left) defeated Frenchman Antoine Delpero (pictured below) in the final, after Australia's last surviving surfers, Harley Ingleby, Jared Neal and Bryce Young were all eliminated in the Fourth Round.

Harley came up against a redhot Ned Snow, who even scored a 10-point ride from all judges. It must have been disappointing for Harley, as by winning the first event in France earlier this year he was in the box seat for a World Title. At one stage this second event was only a maybe, and if it didn't happen then Harley would have already been the champ.

However, for world longboarding, having the second event was certainly the better way for the sport to move forward, especially in such an area as southern California, where longboarding is almost a religion.

Coffs Harbours's Jared Neal was bettered by the contest winner, Bonga; while Angourie's Bryce Young had a great contest, especially for such a young surfer, and it took the eventual runner-up, Delpero, to better him.

California's San Onofre provided great mal-friendly waves and beautiful weather right through the event, and just the fact that the second event went ahead was great news for world longboarding.

We'll have photos from Sylvain Cazenave and more coverage in ALB#61, on sale Dec 17.
